Iran Begins Pouring Concrete for Second Nuclear Reactor

Iran begins pouring concrete at the Bushehr Nuclear Plant; The plant is located over 400 miles south of Tehran; Both the first and second reactor to be installed at the Bushehr plant were partially funded by the Russians.

In their pursuit of a second nuclear power reactor, Iran announced on Sunday that they have started to pour concrete at the Bushehr Nuclear Plant. The Bushehr plant is located approximately 440 miles south of Tehran, the capital of Iran. The first reactor at Bushehr was partially funded by Iran’s ally to the north, Russia, and the same is true of the one they are now pursuing.

This new announcement follows Iran’s previous violation of the 2015 agreement in the last two weeks when they announced their intention to inject enriched uranium into over 1000 first-generation centrifuges. Seeking to justify their actions, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, stated, “It was not us who started breaking commitments, it was them who did not keep to their commitments and cannot accept the nuclear deal as a one-way road map.”

Reopening this nuclear plant has only been made possible by Iran’s violation of the 2015 Nuclear Deal, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), because Bushehr requires 4.5% enriched uranium, exceeding the terms of the agreement.
